How much time do you have to help dogs?
30 MINUTES
Take a dog for a walk! All these organizations have volunteer programs where you can walk dogs.
Doggie Style Pet stores allow you to easily sign up to take out one of the dogs in their stores.
Many shelters have robust volunteer programs that welcome volunteers for dog walking, cleaning and other tasks.
1-8 HOURS
Take a dog out for the day. Our Animal Cabin can provide assistance with transportation to and from shelters/rescues. The following shelters have these day programs. You pick the dog you want to take.
Animal Care and Control (ACCT, Philadelphia)
Brandywine Valley SPCA (West Chester)
Providence Animal Center (Media)
Make enrichment treats (at your house or in shelter)
Animal Care and Control (ACCT, Philadelphia)
Transport dogs
Home at Last (“drive foster dogs to vet appointments, to Meet & Greet events, to other volunteers’ homes, or to their forever homes”)
ACCT and other shelters always need help with transporting dogs
Plant in our sniff garden (at your house or Cabin). Giving dogs the opportunity to sniff can be just as enriching as physical exercise! We want to plant a Sniff Garden in four of our Community Garden plots. We need people that want to plan it and plant it. Our canine visitors will appreciate plants that are aromatic and safe to sniff.
Help at adoption events (on our campus). We host rescues and shelters (in our main building) that need a venue for their Meet and Greet dog and cat adoption events. We can always use helpers to set up, welcome visitors and clean up. These events are really fun and lively!
Shelters also need people to help with cleaning! At ACCT, this means laundry, bowls and enrichment toys. If you are a licensed groomer, that is also welcome as shelter dogs sometimes arrive in bad condition and need a good bath and haircut to show their true self.
ONE NIGHT OR OVER THE WEEKEND
Temp Fostering. Relieve a full-time foster who needs a break or who has an important event. You get to choose which dog you want to take.
Home at Last (“A great way to start fostering is “temp fostering.” When a foster goes on vacation, they will post a description of their dog and the coverage dates needed. You can choose which dog and which dates would be a good fit for you – there are no permanent responsibilities.”)
PAWS Philadelphia (“Pet sitting for other foster parents is incredibly helpful to prevent pets from being returned to the shelter.”)
2 WEEKS (Dogs from out of state)
Dogs coming from out of state must stay in quarantine for 2 weeks. This means being with one person for that time period.
FULL-TIME FOSTER
“The length of fostering time before adoption can vary greatly, from a week, to several months. Some dogs may need more time because of their age, behavior issues, or medical condition…or just because they haven’t found their best match yet.”
You choose the dog and supplies are provided!
